FAQs

Why should I apply for a licence or device registration through Open Spectrum instead of directly through the ACMA?

  • Saves you time—we are equipped to provide a highly efficient service and generally the time needed to obtain a licence through us is much quicker.
  • Saves you money—the total cost of obtaining a licence through us can often be a few hundred dollars less per licence.

How much does it cost to get a licence?

The total fees for a single licence comprise two components:

  • Our coordination fee—depends on the type of service being licensed.
  • ACMA licence fees & chargesalso depend on the type of service, as well as other factors including frequency, bandwidth and location.

For common licence types feel free to use our ACMA Licence Fee Calculator (you will need to register to see the coordination fee component). For other licence types that are not available in the calculator, please contact us.

How long does it take to get a licence?

We pride ourselves on efficiency and fast turn-around times. As a first step we will carry out a frequency coordination study to identify the most suitable available frequencies for your system. We aim to inform you of available spectrum options within the same business day if possible, however we may need a little longer for multiple licences.

With your approval to proceed, we will issue a Frequency Assignment Certificate and lodge the licence application with the ACMA immediately. The time taken by the ACMA to then issue the licence depends on how busy they are and how long it takes for the licence fees and charges to be paid, which Open Spectrum may prepay to speed up the process.

For urgent requirements such as interference issues, the total turn-around time for a licence can be as short as a day or two.

How do I apply for a licence?

Please follow these simple steps or give us a call and we can guide you through the process.

What about spectrum licence device registrations?

The process for registering devices authorised to operate under a spectrum licence is often even simpler and cheaper than for apparatus licensing, and generally involves no charge from the ACMA when the device is registered through Open Spectrum. Simply follow these steps or call us.

Can I have the specific frequency I want?

Our system is suited to coordinating your requested frequency, and if possible we will assign it. However, it is our duty to adhere to the ACMA's coordination requirements and assignment rules, and to apply good engineering judgement. If the requested frequency is not available then we will do our best to find the next best solution.
